Gorilla Trekking in Uganda

Intimate Primate Wildlife Experiences On Your Dream Gorilla Trekking Trip to Uganda

Our gorilla trekking tours in Uganda set out to see and spend some time with the remaining mountain gorilla families in Africa, all of which are found in the tropical rainforest belt that spans Uganda, Rwanda and the Congo. The trekking days are fun and exciting, and a once-in-a-lifteime experience for many of our guests.

Mountain gorillas can be found in two natural habitats in Uganda: Bwindi Impenetrable Forest and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park in the Virunga massif further toward the south. Nearly half of the remaining gorillas live in Bwindi, so the concentration of gorillas there is fairly high and that makes it a great trekking destination. Mgahinga on the other hand, despite being a part of the Virunga massif, has only a few gorilla families residing in it, and it is a smaller park. Gorillas are accessible for visiting in both parks.

Most of our gorilla trekking tours would involve being in the Bwindi or Mgahinga areas for around two to three clear days, one of which is normally used for the trek itself, and the other one or two for hiking and exploring the area more broadly. Within those few days, we generally recommend doing the trek later during your stay so that you have a day or two to acclimatise to the area by doing some forest walks first, before you do your gorilla trekking.

On the day of your gorilla trek, you will set out from your lodge in the early morning from where our guide will take you to the start point of the trekking route and assist you with formalities and briefing. You will then do the trek from there with two park rangers from the UWA, trekking through the forest in search of one of the habituated gorilla families. Trekking time to the gorilla varies from half an hour to two hours, and once you have found the gorilla family, you will stay for around an hour, before heading back the departure point to get your certificate, meet our guide and then arrive back at your lodge in the afternoon.

Gorilla trekking in Uganda does require a permit. We will arrange permits for you, which we do after confirmation of your gorilla trekking tour with us. We normally arrange one permit per guest for a single day of trekking, but if you do wish to do two trekking days, simply let us know and we will arrange accordingly. We will also assist you with information on preparation and packing as you get closer to your date of travel to ensure that you are well prepared for this very special day.

Trekking can vary from seeming like a walk in the park for some, to a strenuous day out for others, but is quite manageable by most adults. The difficulty of your trek varies on a number of factors, one of which is the trekking location chosen - some locations in Uganda are steeper and tougher than others - so please ensure that you inform our travel specialist of your preferences so that they can plan the most suitable location for you.

By comparison to Rwanda, trekking is done at a similar but slightly lower altitude and also tends to be a little less steep in some locations - and thus slightly easier walking in places. The downside, however, of doing your trek in Uganda is that both Bwindi Impenetrable Forest and Mgahinga National parks are a little slower and more of a hassle to get in and out of, and the surrounding areas marginally more populated than those in Rwanda. although immersing yourself in some of this can add some memorable experiences to your trip with us.

Our gorilla trekking tours in Uganda also work well when done together with a visit to some of the other primates in Uganda - from Bwindi, one can head up through Bugiri and Kigezi to Kibale to trek for Chimpanzees and see some other rare primate species such as Colobus monkeys. To combine with a classic wildlife safari on the African savannahs, we normally include game drives through Queen Elizabeth National Park, and highly recommend doing a Uganda and Kenya combination to explore the Maasai Mara and areas such as Samburu and Mathews Range - fantastic trips overall!

You have a lot to look forward to when trekking in Uganda. All of our gorilla trekking trips are tailor-made to each individual guest, so get in touch with one of our travel specialists today to discuss your plans and start planning your very own trekking tour, tailored to your unique dreams and wishes.

Ol Donyo was really magnificent. The managers of the camp - Shaun Mousley and Amy both are very warm and friendly. They made us feel very welcomed and we thoroughly enjoyed staying at Ol Donyo. The camp is on par in terms of standards with Singita group, in terms of quality of their accommodation and service.

Joey, Singapore

We had an absolutely wonderful time in SA! Thank you for all your arrangements!

The tour you organised to Cape Point was excellent and our guide for the day, Jerry, was very engaging and knowledgeable.

Our recommendation for first timer safari goers is that 5 days is an absolute minimum to go for.

Karen, Singapore

We were very happy with the whole trip and are planning to visit different lodges in Africa. Next up we are looking at Tanzania for next year and we think it will likely be a yearly trip for us to Africa!

Karen, Singapore

The feeling at Mara Plains was really good. The managers were great, a lovely couple, and the guides were really good as well.

Thanks Stacey, we had a great time, everything went very smoothly. By far the easiest trip we have taken. Kim was there to meet us in Johannesburg and everything went very smooth from there, pickups, flights, reservations, etc. Ate way too much, saw lions on a kudu hunt, leopard finishing off a little duiker, rhino, elephant, impala, bush bark, water buffalo, wildebeest, nyla, etc. Very sad to leave!

Robert, Malaysia

Suffice to say we had a great time! The organisation worked as clockwork, and all thanks to you for organising it perfectly. The two guides we had were excellent and we saw the Big 5 in both Tarangire and the Serengeti.

We utilized Robert Mark Safaris for a recent adventure holiday to Serengeti & Ngorongoro. It had always been on our bucket list. Robert Mark Safaris were fantastic in ensuring that out trip went seamlessly, and we were especially pleased with the detail that they placed on our personal requests. They also provided some great recommendations that added special memories to our trip. Thanks again, we will be back.

Steven Rowe - Australia

Amazing experience that took us to two different safari lodges.

With plenty of opportunities for hiccups along the way the whole trip ran very smoothly and was the trip of a life time. I highly recommend Robert Mark Safaris if you are looking for a hassle free, safari experience.

David S - Hong Kong

Our expectations were high, but the reality topped all preconceptions.

A group of my friends and I were looking for an African Adventure when we were recommended Robert Mark Safaris, and we were not disappointed. The service we received from the Robert Mark Safaris team were second to none and we could not be more thankful. Thanks again, and we cant wait to return!

We could hear the elephants walking through the camp at night, hyenas cackling away close by and even hippos as they left the water to graze in the cool of the evening.

Fonty Z

Elephants were a frequent visitor around our tent particularly one which liked to sleep beside our tent, buffalo tended to wander past and numerous small animals delighted us with their antics.

Bev P

Mombo is one of the premier camps in the Okavango Delta. Food, accommodation and service are absolutely top class.

M Witul

E - for excellent, excessive and exceptional.

Eud - Hong Kong

Excellent Trip! King's Pool will be first on our list for our next visit to Botswana.

Spencer L

Our entire experience at Chitabe was first-class. The wildlife we were able to see in a few short days was unbelievable.

"Abu Camp on the Okavango Delta in Botswana is surely at the top end for luxury African safari camps… There is an incredible amount of game to be viewed… Finally, the great attraction of the camp is the Abu elephant herd."

Gordon D

My Boyfriend and I were very happy with the service provided by Robert Mark Safaris on our visit to the South Africa - we went to the Sabi Sand Game Reserve and Cape Town They made sure we were taken care of the whole way through and even planned ahead of us to make sure our activities were scheduled according to the weather conditions. Two Thumbs up!

E Lim - Singapore

I was fortunate enough to get to spend two nights at Sabi Sabi Earth Lodge. What a great Experience. Sabi Sabi is a top class reserve and the game viewing was brilliant. Robert Mark Safaris did a great job & the lodge itself is luxurious and modern and a really nice place to return to after sundowners and a night drive!
